Aflac, New York State Association of Health Care Providers and Global Center for Medical Innovation Deliver 80,000 Face Shields to Protect New York’s Frontline Workers

New York, Aug. 28, 2020 – Aflac Incorporated, a leader in supplemental insurance at U.S. worksites, has partnered with the New York State Association of Health Care Providers (NYSHCP) and the Global Center for Medical Innovation (GCMI) to provide face shields to downstate home- and community-based care agencies that continue to deal with hot spots of COVID-19 cases. Courtesy of a $2 million donation by Aflac, home care agencies in New York City and Long Island are receiving face shields as part of a national pandemic response.

“The community response and support from corporate partners like Aflac has been truly inspiring,” said Kathy Febraio, CAE, president and CEO of NYSHCP. “As health care providers continue to fight the global pandemic, this donation will assist home care providers in protecting their patients and staff as they deliver vital home care services to the state’s most vulnerable individuals.”

This donation comes as part of Aflac’s $5 million pandemic response effort, with $2 million for GCMI, a comprehensive innovation center using innovative design and development to rapidly scale production to help support medical device shortages, particularly as it relates to ventilators and protective masks. GCMI, which produced the 80,000 face shields, works in collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta’s Pediatric Technology Center.

"Whether COVID-19 has directly impacted you or a family member, or even if you are witnessing the impact of this global pandemic through the media, one thing is very clear: as Americans must work together to address this issue," Aflac U.S. President Teresa White said. "At Aflac, our mission is to be there for our policyholders in their time of need, and that commitment extends to the communities we serve. We are pleased to provide the resources to help the GCMI produce these needed safeguards and for NYSHCP to help deliver this necessary equipment that will protect our frontline workers."

"GCMI is the bridge connecting clinicians to help translate ideas through development and scaling solutions rapidly, where it can have broad impact on health care worker safety and patient care," GCMI CEO Tiffany Wilson said. "This funding helps get the relief needed to the frontline by accelerating innovation and collaboration."
