RISK OF SEVERE DISEASE FROM MOSQUITO & TICK BITES
The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has issued a health advisory warning of an increased risk of severe mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses among patients taking certain immunosuppressive medications, particularly B cell-depleting therapies.August and September are peak months for mosquito-borne illnesses in New York. West Nile virus, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), Powassan virus and Jamestown Canyon virus can all be acquired in the state. NYSDOH advises that patients taking immunosuppressive medications should take particular care to prevent mosquito and tick bites.
Home care providers should be aware of the increased risk and reinforce mosquito– and tick bite prevention with staff and clients, particularly those who may be immunocompromised.
